“Bodied Forth:” conceptual blending and gesture in Shakespeare

The study of linguistic processing – and the embodied and embedded thinking that it reflects and shapes – offers a tremendous tool to those of us wanting to know how and why stories are told by bodies onstage. In this paper I will provide three examples of how conceptual blending theory and gesture research has expanded my readings of Shakespeare’s plays on the page and on the stage. I will stage the connections between an edifying interpretation of Hamlet by the people of a West African village and the casting of Sam Shepard in Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet (2000). By going under the language we think of as literal, we can enrich our understanding of the play, illuminate our conceptual structures, and expand options for staging and embodying the play. Ophelia’s death and Shepard’s Ghost are both conceptual blends that deeply impact our conception of the play as a whole and a cognitive method of analysis allows for a smarter performance analysis.

Of course, research on gesture has shown persuasively that language is profoundly embodied. In the final section of my paper I will look specifically at how Shepard uses his hands to communicate with and against the language. I will also raise some methodological challenges of studying gesture onstage.

The test for me of the application of conceptual blending theory or cognitive science to products of the creative mind is not if it answers with finality some question, but rather whether or not it helps us get to the next question of interest. Conceptual blending theory and cognitive linguistics more broadly put pressure on old readings and generate future research questions. The question, then, is not what does Shakespeare mean when he says that Ophelia drowned or that theatre should be like a mirror held up to nature, but rather what further questions can we ask about Hamlet once we have used blending theory to explain how he makes his meaning?

How people conceptualize the web today

When the world wide web came into popular use in the 1990s, people had to develop ways to talk about it and think about it. In 1995, we interviewed novices (individuals who had never used the web) to determine how they would describe their experience using the web. We found that people routinely anchored their conceptual experience in terms of physical experience (Maglio & Matlock, 1999). They routinely described websites in terms of physical locations, and browsing in terms of physical motion, for instance, I went into this thing called Yahoo, or I couldn’t get back to where I was. They also talked about containment, as in I went into Brian’s tattoo something or other. They also blended experiential domains (see Fauconnier & Turner, 1998), especially internal conceptual actions (e.g., motion, agency, containment) with external physical actions (e.g., clicking on hyperlinks, typing in URLs), as in I clicked on uh grapes, and it brought me to this place.

Fifteen years later, people talk about and think about the web differently. Recently, we interviewed people about web use. Just as in 1995, we asked 12 undergraduates to use the web for ten minutes and report what they did. In our preliminary analysis of participant responses, we coded verbs that described web activities, and placed them into four categories: “web,” for specific sorts of web applications, such as “check (email)” and “update (facebook status)”; “motion,” for physical movement for virtual action, such as “went (to google)”; “information,” for information actions, such as “read” or “look up”; and “other,” for all other verbs. Across all participants, about half the verbs were in the “other” category (48%). The rest were about evenly split among the three other categories, “web” (19%), “motion” (16%), and “information” (17%).

Many interesting results have emerged in the new data. There are far fewer references to metaphorical containment and less variation in motion language. There are also more “web” actions and more “information” actions. It appears that now people focus on the actions they can perform with software applications and in terms of accessing and reviewing information sources. One participant described her actions this way: There’s something about Netflix …and something about the company, and then there was an article about a flu shot.” Here information unfolds in time rather than in space. The emphasis is on the information rather than on action. Another participant said: On Facebook, [I] poked a couple people, and updated my status, relying on specific structure about the application being used, Facebook, rather than on the underlying web.

Metaphor naturally recruits aspects of our everyday embodied experience and structures our everyday understanding relatively abstract domains (Gibbs, 1994; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). But our results show how as a given domain becomes more ubiquitous and more familiar, it acquires more of its own structure and some aspects of prior metaphorical structure are foregrounded or replaced by others. The conceptual structure of the web is now based more on what users can do rather than on where users can go.

Conceptual blending in Supyire healing and protection spells

This paper examines Supyire (Senufo, Gur, Niger-Congo) spells (kulushî) which accompany healing (wempyii) and protecting (sárágá) rituals performed by ordinary people (as opposed to herbalist specialists). As in many African cultures (cf. for example Azande spells, described in Evans-Pritchard 1937: 450ff), Supyire spells use ordinary language. They do not contain archaic or incomprehensible words or out-of-the-ordinary syntax, nor is the exact wording important.

Like Sørensen (2007), this paper analyses the rituals using conceptual blending theory, though the approach differs in some respects from Sørensen’s. For example, Sørensen (p. 74ff) claims that all magic rituals involve the blending of “profane” and “sacred” input spaces, but the latter is not a useful category in the rituals examined here. In fact, the category of “magic” is not a useful category for understanding insiders’ conceptualizations of the activities investigated here.

Supyire medicine, like much folk medicine, is analogical. As one man explained, Wyɛɛ̀re ɲyɛ yasumaga. ‘Medicine is an analogical thing (lit. a thing measured (against something else)).’ The success of the healing or protection depends at least to some extent on the aptness of the analogy between the materia or the manipulation of the materia, and the thing or situation to be altered. The spells accompanying healing and protection rites normally mention the analogy involved. The following (translated literally), uttered while pouring cold water on live coals in the presence of an ill person, is typical:

These coals are hot.
This cold water is cold.
The heat of these coals, the cold water will remove it.
Like the cold water has removed the heat from these coals,
may the heat (=disease) go out of [patient’s name]’s body.

The healing depends on bringing together a domain of directly manipulable items (cold water and live coals) and a domain in which direct manipulation is impossible (removing a disease from a patient). Change in the “effecting” (manipulable) domain is meant to effect a change in the non-manipulable but analogous “affected” domain, and this is referred to explicitly in the spell.

More interesting, as well as more common, are spells which, in addition to prompting for the construction of the effecting and affected mental spaces, explicitly mention in parallel a counterfactual (or extremely unlikely) space and the actual, but unwanted, situation in a fourth space. Following is a typical example, uttered while inserting a small object representing a person who has been losing weight into an incision made in a baobab tree:

If the baobab has become thin,
may [name] become thin.
The baobab has not become thin,
may [name] not become thin.

Such spells may be analysed as prompting a network of four spaces, arranged in two parallel pairs: a counterfactual situation in the effecting domain (the baobab has become thin) is linked conditionally to an actual but undesirable situation in the affected domain (the person being treated has in fact become thin). This parallels a factual statement in the effecting domain (the baobab has not become thin) which is linked to an unreal but desired situation in the affected domain (may the patient not grow thin). Although not explicitly encoded, an interpretation of contrast emerges from this network.

Creative space building in (inter)action: the case of joint fantasy in dyadic interactions

Cognitive approaches to linguistic creativity have focused primarily on the construction of hybrid or layered conceptualizations on the basis of a variety of cognitive processes, including analogical reasoning (Hofstadter 1995, Thagard fc.), conceptual blending and compression (Fauconnier & Turner 2002, Veale et al. 2011), frame-shifting (Coulson 2001), inferential chaining (Csikszentmihalyi 1996), deautomatization (Giora 2003) and many others. In the majority of linguistic studies, the focus is on the creative end product of these mechanisms (and their impact), rather than on choices and pathways (Weisberg 2006) that lead to that product. This can be explained by the fact that researchers generally don’t have access to the online meaning construction processes that language users employ in producing creative output.

In this paper, we shift the focus of attention from a product perspective to a producer-centered view on creativity. More specifically, we inquire into the incremental steps that language users take in generating novel conceptualizations, like idea generation or interactional hitchhiking on ideas (Osborn 1953, Vidal 2011). In order to gain access to these online strategies of creativity, we video-recorded a series of 15 dyadic interactions (between well-acquainted peers), in which participants were instructed to jointly reflect on future applications of mobile technology (e.g. novel functions for mobile phones) (as part of the MIMIC corpus, Brône & Oben 2011). The interactive set-up triggers the verbalization of thought processes (communicating a line of reasoning to the partner) and the joint construction of creative conceptualizations (taking up input from the other). The resulting data provide a wealth of information on pathways, recruitment and composition in creative reasoning.

The corpus data will serve as an empirical basis for exploring two specific research questions:

  1. If creativity as divergent thinking (Runko 2010) involves the recruitment of novel input
    on the basis of analogical reasoning (Baughman & Mumford 1995, Holyoak & Thagard
    1997), and the construction of conceptual blends using that input, how does this process
    of creative mental space building take shape in interaction? Here we focus on the joint
    strategy of domain scanning as it unfolds in discourse, where a move by one participant
    (e.g. in proposing a novel conceptual blend) serves as an anchor and trigger for the coparticipant,
    who may ‘run the blend’ (Fauconnier & Turner 2002) and propose novel
    conceptualizations on the basis of it.
  2. How is creative space building coded linguistically? Which lexical or constructional
    patterns serve as space builders in the incremental and multimodal process of joint
    creativity? And to what extent do interlocutors align their linguistic and non-verbal
    representations (gesture, posture) (Pickering & Garrod 2004) in co-constructing novel
    mental space configurations? At the lexical level, this is reflected in the type of
    conceptual pacts (Brennan & Clark 1996) that co-participants establish to refer to a novel
    conceptualization. At the grammatical level, successive steps in the joint creative process
    are typically framed in identical or similar forms, yielding a strong effect of dialogic
    resonance (Du Bois 2011).

Quotation as a Multiomodal Construction

Introduction
People commonly produce quotations with the devices like, said, and goes when reporting another person’s speech, and to varying degrees, when describing non-speech or non-human sounds

‘He was like “…..”’

‘The cows were like “mooo”’

‘The babies were going “ga ga ga”’

These quotations are often coordinated with imitative bodily gestures (Streek & Knapp, 1992) and might also involve some amount of vocal imitation of the speech or other sound (Clark & Gerrig, 1990). Past research has shown that the particular device that is used can be selected based on a variety of factors, such as whether the quoted information displayed attitudes or emotions (suggesting like, Buchstaller, 2001), contained sounds (suggesting goes, Butters, 1980), and whether the person quoted or addressed was of a higher status (suggesting said, Blackwell & Fox Tree, manuscript).

However, given how imitation is often incorporated into quotation, we wondered whether the choice of quotative device might also be associated with the amount of vocal and gestural imitation enacted by the speaker. Such an association would link the planning of words and grammar (i.e. relating to how the quotation is to be constructed) to imitative processes like those involved in iconic gesture.

Methods
Fifty-two undergraduates at the University of California, Santa Cruz, participated in the experiment in exchange for course credit. Participants watched a series of videos, and were asked to retell the videos in an entertaining way were recorded as they offered spontaneous, quotation-rich descriptions of thirteen video clips to a confederate addressee. The clips contained a variety of sounds including human speech, animals producing human-like speech, animal vocalizations, and inanimate noises. Analysis focused on video clips in which participants used goes, likes and saids to report the same content, allowing us to evaluate imitativeness in association with device independently of the content being quoted. This included two clips: a dog howling what sounded like the words ‘I love you,’ and a talking parrot that produced imitations of human speech and the roar of a tiger.

Vocal and gestural ratings demonstrate that when like and goes were used, the quoted content was associated with significantly more vocal and gestural imitation than with said. The mean rating for vocal imitation for goes was 4.6 (SD =.72), for like was 4.7 (SD = .70), and for said was 2.00 (SD = . 38), F(2, 36) = 68.2, p < .001. The mean rating for gesturing for likes was 2.7 (SD =.79), for goes was 2.74 (SD =1.17), and for saids was 1.84 (SD = .79). These results suggest that devices like and goes are used to highlight the imitative or demonstrative aspects of the subsequent quotation, a point that is further supported by the positive association between gesture and vocal imitativeness, r(93) = .363, p < .001. Thus, quotation may be aptly treated as a multimodal construction that serves to combine linguistic structures with the iconic processes of gesture. In this light, quotation might be compared to certain constructions in sign languages, like classifier constructions, that similarly integrate linguistic structures with iconicity (Liddell, 2003). Both cases point to the broader consideration of language as a multimodal system of communication that makes use of both arbitrary (i.e., traditionally “linguistic”) and iconic elements (Permiss, Thompson, & Vigliocco, 2010).

Tracing Semantic Change in Athapaskan Body-Part, Effluvia and Ephemera Terms

Inspired by Wilkins’ (1996) seminal work, this study sets out from a circumscribed semantic domain, the human body, and seeks to exploit insights from Cognitive Semantics in order to uncover word etymologies. As a conceptual domain, the human body encompasses not only those parts whose removal would constitute great loss to the organism, but also those that are dispensed with regularly, such as bodily excretions, or periodically, like fingernails.

The data gathered for this study included all three types, here referred to respectively as: Bodyparts (for the permanent parts of the body, such as ‘head’, ‘arm’), Effluvia (for bodily products that are dispensed with regularly ‘feces’, ‘urine’) and Ephemera (for bodily substances that are temporary or easily removed, such as ‘fingernails’, ‘warts’). Terms from were gathered into a database called BEET. The BEET (Body-part, Ephemera and Effluvia Terms) database covering 29 Athapaskan languages and dialects was constructed for this purpose. An onomasiological grid of 131 English language terms formed the basis of the data gathering technique. Published sources, chiefly dictionaries, but raw field notes as well, provided the main sources of the data.

In view of the scarcity of diachronic data for Athapaskan languages, studying the etymology of BEETs requires comparing terms both language internally and across languages to unearth cases of semantic shift, and propose older and younger meaning-form associations. The use of the BEET database provides a rigorous and anon-opportunistic data gathering technique against which rates and types of semantic change can be quantitatively assessed and evaluated.

The reconstruction of the word histories of BEETs in Athapaskan therefore also contributes to the wider research field of semantic change by strengthening the case for the systematicity of semantic change as proposed in Wilkins (1996), as opposed to the more widespread attitude that change in meaning is random and unpredictable (Hock 1998: 308, Anttila 1972: 147).

The role of mental simulation in comprehension of interactional and multimodal language use

Recent, embodied theories of meaning known as ‘simulation semantics’ posit that language comprehension is accomplished via mental simulation (Barsalou, 1999; Kaschak & Glenberg, 2000). However the meaning of ‘comprehension’ varies according to the researcher’s perspective on interpersonal communication. Influential models in social psychology have emphasized that in realistic communication, comprehension not only involves a process of decoding information, but also involves exchange of intentions and perspective-taking during collaborative interaction (Krauss & Fussel, 1996).

In this paper, we argue that the way comprehension is characterized in experimental simulation semantics is rather narrow, as it largely ignores these social aspects of communication. Despite providing an innovative approach to the study of meaning, simulation-based theories of comprehension draw upon traditional encoding-decoding paradigms in the sense that they assume that the meaning of a sentence is taken to be inherently carried by the sentence itself, i.e. meaning is separated from the communicator’s intentions. We propose four hypotheses that need to be tested in order to assess the extent to which simulation semantics is a fruitful framework for studying comprehension in realistic face-to-face communicative scenarios.

First we consider the role of mental simulation in language production. Based on McNeill’s (1992) and others’ suggestion that mental representation underlying language production has a partly imagistic character, we hypothesize that meaning representation in language production and in language comprehension have a similar embodied nature. In light of this, we argue that comprehension in interpersonal communication can be viewed in terms of the degree to which interlocutors’ simulations of some content are sufficiently matched for the current purpose. The literature from simulation semantics helps make explicit predictions as to what it means for interlocutors’ mental representations to be homologous.

Second, we propose two conditions for integrating simulation semantics with a ‘dialogic perspective’ on communication, a paradigm in social psychology that takes comprehension to be the product of a collaborative process of establishing shared conceptualizations (Rommetveit, 1983). In order to define dialogical comprehension in terms of mental simulations, it must be supposed that simulations are (1) dynamically co-constructed during conversation, and (2) endowed with a ‘confidence dimension’: interlocutors retain a level of certainty of having synchronous representations of the expressed information. These suppositions make it feasible that interactive alignment and feedback mechanisms help to establish mutual confidence of having coordinated simulations.

Third, we consider how simulation semantics relates to the ‘intentionalist’ view of comprehension, taking communication as the exchange of intentions (vid. Relevance Theory [Sperber & Wilson, 1986]). Recent research (Gallese, 2007) suggests neural overlap between systems responsible for attributing intentions to others and those responsible for mental imagery. Although the precise relation between understanding linguistically presented information and understanding the underlying intentions remains underspecified, converging evidence suggests that these capacities rely on strongly intertwined embodied mechanisms.

Finally, taking the multimodal character of spoken language use into account, we argue that simulation semantics calls for an account of the differential ways in which verbal, nonverbal and co-verbal signals contribute to simulation of content and intent.

By taking these four issues into account, simulation-based theories may more closely approach a complete account of language comprehension.

A construction account of [be done NP]: What Canadian English tells us about constructions and frames

In the study presented here I take a usage-based, construction grammar (CG) view of meaning (Fillmore, Kaye & O’Connor 1988;; Goldberg 1995, 2006; Kemmer and Barlow 2000), which assumes that linguistic meaning is a property of both lexical items and grammatical constructions. This study investigates the widely accepted pattern of Canadian English be done+NP (eg. I am done my homework), and argues that a construction is required to account for the semi-idiomatic aspects of the syntax, semantics, and dialectal variation of the pattern. I motivate properties of the be done+NP construction, providing empirical evidence to support the theory that constructions are learned form-function pairings based on schematic mental representation. In a CG approach, the existence and common usage of two variants suggests two separate form-function pairings, and this is borne out in the study presented here.

The pattern: Both American and Canadian English usage contains the pattern be done –ing (examples 1-3) and be done+PP(with) (4-5). However, in Canadian English the pattern also includes be done+NP (6-10), which are highly unacceptable to all American English speakers except for small pockets in northeastern Vermont and Pennsylvania (Yerastov 2008). The construction analysis offered in this paper focuses on the syntactic and semantic differences of the Canadian variant be done+NP in contrast with the variant that is acceptable in both major dialects, be done+PP(with). Data was gathered with WebCorp, a linguistic search engine for accessing the web as corpus (http://www.webcorp.org.uk). The Canadian data was retrieved from Canadian blogs and websites (restricting the domain to .ca), and the American data was collected from American newspapers, blogs and Wikipedia entries using WebCorp as well.

Findings: The data supports previous research that both variants are robust and common in Canadian usage, whereas American usage is restricted to be done+PP(with). In addition it was found that the two Canadian variants are not interchangeable, but rather express different aspectual information. Lastly, the be done+NP variant of Canadian English appears to have a low degree of schematicity (grammatical productivity) and a high degree of lexical specificity, where the NP is most likely to be a lexical item in an educational program frame, or related to household activities such as cleaning or eating. I take this as a starting point for explorations of how constructions evoke frames, and, alternately, how frames constrain constructions. I suggest that the be done+NP construction evokes multiple frames (the domestic/educational ones just mentioned, as well as a ‘completion’ frame) and thus represents a blend. Lastly I show that the construction also contains elements of viewpoint which are not present in related constructions; these facts related to viewpoint are captured in a frames and construction approach.

Conclusions and future research: This study shows that be done+NP encodes different types of semantic and syntactic information than be done+PP(with). Furthermore, the corpus-based, empirical evidence supports a constructionist view of mental representation. As American English lacks the be done+NP form of the construction, future research will investigate how American English usage expresses the semantics that Canadians use that construction to convey.
